MURDOCH’S TABLE TOP
Murdoch’s Table Top™ is the perfect product to use when you are looking for an extremely durable finish with a quick build that gives the appearance of a hand-rubbed surface, but want the ease of a brush-on finish. Murdoch’s Table Top™ is a high-quality uralkyd resin, formulated with our Botanical Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer, low toxic driers and solvents.
Our Gloss formulation has a brilliant luster, much like the gloss from a French Polish! Our Satin formulation dries to a clear, bright surface eliminating the "plastic" look that is seen in so many other low sheen resin based systems. Sutherland Welles Ltd ®’s formulation uses only the best and purest resin available on the market today.
Some of the outstanding features of Murdoch’s Table Top™ are its ability to dry in 6-8 hours and application of the finish in virtually any climatic condition! (Note: Satin Lustre will require longer cure time 12-24 hours.) In addition, it is formulated with our low-toxic, all botanical solvent, Di-Citrusol™ which has a pleasant, citrus odor that dissipates rapidly. Its light-honey color will not change the natural color of the wood or alter any pre-applied stain color. It also minimizes the ambering that occurs with the aging process of a wood finish.
The Table Top™ formulation has a four to one ratio of resin and Botanical Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer to allow a longer set-up time and more workability for larger panels without seriously compromising the cure time. It is possible to modify the resin with even more Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer to allow longer set-up times or to create a wiping preparation. Finally, we have added a "slip" ingredient that gives the incredibly smooth feel to bar tops and table tops.
DIRECTIONS FOR USING MURDOCH’S TABLE TOP™
WOOD PREPARATION:
All wood surfaces should be free of lint, dirt, grease, wax, oil and old paint. If you are refinishing old wood, please make sure to remove all the old finish and then thoroughly sand the wood using up to a 220 grit paper. New wood should be sanded to no higher than a 220 grit, higher grits close down the wood pores interfering with maximum penetration of the Hard Sealer deep into the wood fibers.
THE SEALING PROCESS:
After properly preparing the wood, the surface should be sealed with Hard Sealer™ prior to applying the Table Top™. For old wood, the sealing process may be reduced to one coat of Hard Sealer™ as some finish still remains in the woods fibers. If however, the first coat is absorbed quickly and completely; two coats of the Hard Sealer may be necessary. If you are using the sealing process on new wood, we recommend that you apply two coats of Murdoch’s Hard Sealer™ according to the directions on the label. If you plan to stain the wood please refer to our Old World Stains literature for best staining results.
APPLICATION OF MURDOCH’S TABLE TOP™:
After the sealing process, sand the surface to a 400 grit finish, vacuum and tack the surface prior to applying your first coat of Table Top™. Apply the Table Top using only a good natural bristle brush. You will need to flow the resin on and move along as the resin sets up quickly. Do not use a rag or cheesecloth as they create streak marks in the finish. It is important to apply the Table Top thinly. Applying the product thickly interferes with curing time in addition to wasting the product! The surface should be cured in 6-8 for Gloss, and 12-24 hrs. for Satin Lustre.
Cure Test: lightly sand in several an inconspicuous areas. A fine, white powder indicates that you can safely apply another coat.
After each coat is cured, prepare the surface by lightly hand sanding using a 400/600 grit paper, vacuum and tack the surface prior to re-coating. All subsequent coats of Table Top are applied the same way as the first. If you wish to obtain a higher gloss, repeat the application process until the desired sheen is reached. The brush can be cleaned with turpentine, mineral spirits, or a citrus-derived solvent, such as Sutherland Welles Ltd. ®’s Di-Citrusol™
MAINTENANCE OF MURDOCH’S TABLE TOP™ FINISH:
The surface can be cleaned with soft cloth and a weak solution of ammonia or vinegar and warm water.
RESURFACING WITH MURDOCH’S TABLE TOP™:
Over time the surface may become worn and may need to be re-coated. Subsequent applications of Murdoch’s Table Top™ bond permanently with previously applied coats. Remove dirt and grime with Sutherland Welles Ltd. ® Cleaner™ or Restorer™. Lightly sand the surfaces to be re-coated with a 400/600grit paper. Thinly apply one or two coats of the Table Top™ according to the above stated instructions.
COVERAGE: 250-300 sq.ft./Quart or 1000-1200 sq.ft. / gallon after two coats of Hard Sealer™. Available in Gloss and Satin.
