CEILINGS & BEAMS
Natural Look
This concept for finishing ceilings and beams is to keep the surface sheen as low as possible to highlight all the wood grain but not make the surface appear to be “finished”. This also eliminates having to deal with uneven absorption that tends to create an uneven sheen. The surfaces are not subjected to abuse, so the purpose in coating them is to bring out all the lovely wood grain not protection. You are looking for more of saturation into the wood with no build. The approach to achieve this aesthetic, we advise using a product with a low solid content and to apply fewer coats.
Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer or Polymerized Tung Oil Low Lustre for old or porous wood offers a perfect all-oil coating. In some instances, using the Murdoch’s Hard Sealer would be an alternative choice as well. We usually recommend applying two coats. This product can be used with a “tint” or “light” dilution of our stain.
Finished Appearance
There are some ceiling designs that require a more highly finished look such as coffered ceilings. They often are also stained to create a more dramatic effect. In these applications, you will want to use our fortified oils as they will assist you in creating a uniform level of sheen and reflectivity.
Murdoch’s Hard Sealer is a great option to achieve those desired results. It is a perfect combination of our Botanical Tung Oil Sealer and the Urethane Alkyd Gloss. It allows a brushed on application that builds a rich, uniform sheen. This process is compatible with a stain as well.
