Exterior Applications
We formulate an Exterior Polymerized Tung Oil and a Marine Spar Varnish for exterior finishing. The choice of the best formulation is based on the actual project. With any exterior project, you need to be prepared to coat the surface annually to renew the finish so it can protect the wood. This makes maintenance both easy and cost effective as it minimizes the labor cost to repair a totally failed coating and provides a lovely aesthetic from year to year.
EXTERIOR CEILINGS, SOFFITS, DECKS, FURNITURE, POSTS AND PORCH FLOORS
Exterior decks and porch floors present a different process that departs from what we typically recommend for an exterior finishing schedule per our product label. The concept here is to use a lower solid and fewer coats of the Exterior Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer in an attempt to keep the finish more in the wood than on the wood, which facilitates an easier maintenance.
Decks and porch floors typically have distinct traffic patterns due to furniture configuration, entrances, etc. that set up specific wear patterns. In an effort to be able to re-oil the entire deck easily, and/or to treat wear areas, a lower solid will be easier to maintain. The other reason to use only the Exterior Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer is to avoid creating a surface that becomes too slippery and therefore dangerous when wet which occurs with multiple coats of a higher solid.
For ceilings and soffits, the need to build a surface isn’t necessary as the surface is never exposed to the sun. Also, it is very difficult to create a uniform level of sheen that reflects light evenly on ceilings, so the concept is to keep the sheen as low as possible using Exterior Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer you can meet those needs.
SIDING
The best choice for finishing siding is based on whether the siding is rough or smooth. For smooth surfaces, we recommend using the Exterior Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer as it will penetrate into the smooth surface deeper and provide better adhesion. Rough siding benefits from using the higher solid in Exterior Polymerized Tung Oil Medium Lustre. More saturation of the rough surface will be achieved providing better protection with a more cost effective square foot cost.
WINDOWS AND DOORS
We suggest using the Exterior Polymerized Tung Sealer and Medium Lustre to finish windows and door which provides a full complement of finish both in the wood and on the wood for maximum protection and coating longevity. For doors, there is often an overhang that will protect a large area of the door usually leaving the bottom of the door more exposed. An oil finish will allow you to spot repair areas of the door that need refurbishing and pass on areas that are more protected. Spar Varnish requires coating the entire surface and therefore is better for doors that are fully exposed.
BOATS
We have the perfect Marine Spar Varnish for bright work on boats. The finishing process begins with applying Exterior Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer which carries the UV guards and mildewcide deep into the wood. Subsequent brushed on coats are combinations of Exterior Polymerized Tung Sealer and Spar Varnish to final coats of full strength Spar. This gives the varnish film terrific flexibility which is crucial for coating longevity and maximum protection. The high gloss has superior depth and clarity and functions to bounce UV radiation off the surface.
