GUNSTOCKS

Our typical recommendation for finishing gunstocks is to use our Polymerized Tung Oil. This is the product and the process below is what typifies a classic description of hand rubbed finishes that have a “gun stock sheen”.

We usually recommend using our High Lustre formulation as it builds to create a well sealed and durable coating, while still maintaining a hand rubbed appearance. It isn’t necessary to use the exterior formulation of our Polymerized Tung Oil as the gunstocks are rarely heavily exposed to the elements and never remain outside exposed to the weather, which is what really causes finish to deteriorate; consistent, harsh exposures.

Many begin the process by wet sanding the High Lustre into the wood using 220-400 grit wet/dry sandpaper. This tends to create a terrific pore filling slurry which is ideal on wood species like Walnut which are typical of gun stocks. After 2-3 wet sanding applications with the High Lustre, you can then hand apply any number of coats to suit the desired level of sheen. Many will also burnish lightly between coats with #0000 steel wool to create a softer more hand rubbed look.

When completed, you have either created or restored a durable and gorgeous patina that is easily cared for and grows more lovely with use and re-oiling.
