Interior Doors

The Polymerized Tung Oil- Lustre of choice or the Murdoch’s Hard Sealer are ideal for finishing interior doors because they are both wiping finishes, which given the details and moldings often found on doors and the provide an easier finishing process. This is especially important if you are finishing “on the hinge” in a vertical orientation. If the construction of the door is a veneer, then using the Murdoch’s Hard Sealer would be preferred.

If you plan to stain the wood, follow the stain guidelines found on the Old World Concentrated Stain page.  You will need to topcoat the stain to protect surface.  The Polymerized Tung Oil as a topcoat will provide a furniture like finish to the door. If you want more sheen or need a more durable, washable surface, the Murdoch’s Head Sealer would be a better alternative.

Trim and Moldings

Trim and moldings are often shaped which tends to crush the wood pore and makes using the Polymerized Tung Oil, penetrating finish more difficult as the oil has a difficult time soaking into the wood. On certain trim pieces such as window sills, you may want more protection from water. For these reasons we suggest using either the Wiping Varnish line or Murdoch’s Hard Sealer and Hard Oil.

If you want the surface to have a softer, supple, furniture- like feel, consider using the Wiping Varnish as it has a significant amount of Polymerized Tung Oil in addition to the urethane fortification.

The Murdoch’s Hard Sealer and Hard Oil will give you a quicker build, faster turn around between coats and a very hard surface with maximum durability.

If you plan to stain the wood, follow the stain guidelines found on the Old World Concentrated Stain page. You will need to topcoat the stain to protect the surface and either of the finishes listed above are suitable as a topcoat.

Balustrades and Railings

Typically, you would finish the balustrades and the railings in the same finish. The natural feel of Polymerized Tung Oil that develops a gorgeous patina over time and repeated use of hands sliding down the surface is the best choice for railings. However, the tedious work of finishing balustrades perhaps would benefit from a quicker build that the Murdoch’s Hard Sealer offers. In either case, you definitely want a wiping finish for this application as the prep between coats for a brushed on varnish would be very time consuming without much benefit.

If you plan to stain the wood, follow the stain guidelines found on the Old World Concentrated Stain page.  You will need to topcoat the stain to protect the surface and either of the finishes listed above are suitable as a topcoat.

Mantles

The products you choose for a mantle would be determined by the style of the mantle. For rustic beams that want to look very natural, Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer or Low Lustre is the perfect choice. For a higher style design such as multiple moldings, using the Murdoch’s Hard Sealer that can be brushed on and built to a lovely sheen would be the best option.
