WALLS & PANELING
Walls and paneling follow along the same concepts as for ceilings. You either want a very natural “unfinished” look that has a matte/low sheen or you want a more “polished” look. The most challenging aspect of finishing walls and paneling is achieving a uniformly reflective surface. It comes down to really an either/or situation. If you keep the sheen low, the finishing process will be simple to achieve the desired aesthetic. If you do want some degree of sheen, the process will require multiple coats to achieve an even looking surface.
Natural Look
For this type of application, a hand-wiped Polymerized Tung Oil is a good option. It is best used on solid wood surfaces, not plywood. Choose Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer or Low Lustre to achieve this look. The number of coats depends on the wood species and the desired level of sheen. It is possible to use a “tint” level of stain with the products and the process.
Polished Look
For applications where you want to stain the wood, if you are using thin veneers or you want to build a full finish on the surface, the product of choice would be a combination of priming and staining with our Polymerized Tung Oil Sealer and Concentrated Old World Stain followed by a topcoat of either Murdoch’s Hard Sealer for low or satin sheen levels. For a higher sheen, use Murdoch’s Hard Oil as a topcoat.
If you plan to stain the wood, follow the stain guidelines found on the Old World Concentrated Stain page. You will need to topcoat the stain to protect the surface and either of the finishes listed above are suitable as a topcoat.
